Dendrometer bands made easy: Using modified cable ties to measure incremental growth of trees1

چکیده
UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY Dendrometer bands are a useful way to make sequential repeated measurements of tree growth, but traditional dendrometer bands can be expensive, time consuming, and difficult to construct in the field. An alternative to the traditional method of band construction is to adapt commercially available materials. This paper describes how to construct and install dendrometer bands using smooth-edged, stainless steel, cable tie banding and attachable rollerball heads. • METHODS AND RESULTS As a performance comparison, both traditional and cable tie dendrometer bands were installed on baldcypress trees at the National Wetlands Research Center in Lafayette, Louisiana, by both an experienced and a novice worker. Band installation times were recorded, and growth of the trees as estimated by the two band types was measured after approximately one year, demonstrating equivalence of the two methods. • CONCLUSIONS This efficient approach to dendrometer band construction can help advance the knowledge of long-term tree growth in ecological studies.

A general model of intra-annual tree growth using dendrometer bands
Tree growth is an important indicator of forest health, productivity, and demography. Knowing precisely how trees' grow within a year, instead of across years, can lead to a finer understanding of the mechanisms that drive these larger patterns. The growing use of dendrometer bands in research forests has only rarely been used to measure growth at resolutions finer than yearly, but intra-annual...
متن کاملModified Rectangular Patch Antenna Loaded With Multiple C Slots for Multiple Applications
A new multiple C-slotted microstrip patch antenna is proposed in the present study. A patch antenna is a wide-beam narrowband antenna. The microstrip patch antenna consists of a very thin metallic strip (patch) placed a small fraction of a wavelength above a ground plane. The patch can be designed in any possible shape and normally made of conducting materials such as copper or gold. This study...
متن کاملTree Circumference Dynamics in Four Forests Characterized Using Automated Dendrometer Bands
Stem diameter is one of the most commonly measured attributes of trees, forming the foundation of forest censuses and monitoring. Changes in tree stem circumference include both irreversible woody stem growth and reversible circumference changes related to water status, yet these fine-scale dynamics are rarely leveraged to understand forest ecophysiology and typically ignored in plot- or stand-...
متن کاملStability Analysis and Robust PID Control of Cable Driven Robots Considering Elasticity in Cables
In this paper robust PID control of fully-constrained cable driven parallel manipulators with elastic cables is studied in detail. In dynamic analysis, it is assumed that the dominant dynamics of cable can be approximated by linear axial spring. To develop the idea of control for cable robots with elastic cables, a robust PID control for cable driven robots with ideal rigid cables is firstly de...

HE dial gauge dendrometer, developed by Reineke a and improved by Daubenmire, a has been in use for the past two years in the Harvard Forest as a tool for measuring the effect of silvicukural treatments on the growth of the residual stand. Its use gives promise of greatly speedin• up silvicultural research by permitting the observer to evaluate the growth produced by treatment years before it w...
